DIY All Natural Relaxing, Lavendar Massage Oil

Are you looking for a nice, DIY gift to get for your significant other for Valentine’s day? How about a massage?  Massages are hands down my favorite gifts to receive, whether it’s a massage from my loved ones or if they buy me a gift certificate, I am equally thankful.  Let’s not kid ourselves either, massages can also be quite romantic which makes them perfect for Valentine’s Day.  The romantic part only comes when you provide the massage though…a gift card just isn’t the same. 🙂

There is no need though to go out and spend a bunch of money on massage oils that have God-knows-what chemicals in them. All you have to do is create this 2 ingredient massage oil to save money and not have to guess what ingredients you will find in the oil.

Here’s how I created this All Natural Massage Oil:

I mix them together into a paste and that’s it.  It’s time to massage.

My husband had a muscle injury last year that I like to massage for him so I figured who better to check out the new massage oil on.  The verdict?  It’s a hit.  Because it is oil based, it helps make it easier to massage.  Plus, it is all organic so I don’t have to worry about the chemicals that are seeping into our bodies.   Lavender is known for its relaxation qualities so we used that to help relax the muscles and ourselves (I find it useful for sleep).

I have also given this massage oil as gifts as part of a spa gift basket to my family members and it was a hit!  If you want to present it as a gift, I used these containers to put them in.

While it does depend on personal experience, I always end up with 2-3 uses with this amount.

DIY: All Natural Kitchen Cleaner!

diy all natural kitchen cleaner, lemon,

I went to deep clean my kitchen this morning and discovered that I was out of my favorite orange cleaner (that’s what I get for letting my son help me clean). Anyway….I did NOT want to go buy more (I live 20 minutes from the store), so I was trying to figure out what I could clean up with and it hit me.  I have a fruit drawer full of lemons and an extra box of baking soda!  Time to get some natural cleaning done!

Have you used this natural method before?  It’s super easy!  Just cut the lemon in half and dip it into baking soda and use it as sort of a scrubbing sponge.  Scrub the area and then wipe down with a wet cloth.  That’s it! 🙂

Check out the difference in my stove top after I used this:

So, I call this one a win!! It was cheap, easy, natural and oh my goodness does it smell good in my kitchen now!

Easy DIY Dryer Sheet Alternative! No More Toxins!

(My trusty old’ laundry cup)

So, the other day I was doing laundry and discovered that I was out of dryer sheets.  URGHHHH! I absolutely hate static cling and running into town wasn’t an option for me.  After checking out several tips online for dryer sheet alternatives and some trial and error, I discovered a great alternative to using the toxin filled sheets and 15 loads later, I love it and I won’t go back!

Here’s what you need:

  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Washcloth

Lightly dampen a washcloth with the vinegar and place it into the dryer with your wet clothes.  The vinegar smell will go away during the drying process and you will have static free clothes!  This even works with towels!

I already use 1/2 cup of vinegar in my laundry for brighter fresher clothes, so I dip my washcloth (I use a small microfiber washcloth since it absorbs less of the liquid) into the cup and squeeze the excess back into the cup before I add it to the wash.  I then put the cloth into the dryer at the beginning of the dry cycle.  That’s it!

(I use this bright orange microfiber washcloth so I can always easily spot it and run it through the next load)

How to Preserve Your Zucchini Bounty

The Best Ways to Preserve Zucchini What is the goal of every gardener?  That’s right, a successful bountiful harvest!  The next question is what on earth are you going to do with that harvest?

Squash and specifically zucchini is often a successful crop, with many gardeners begging people to take it away because there is just too much left over. Zucchini is awesome because it really just grows and grows and if you don’t pick it at just the right time, you are going to have some GIANT zucs on your hands!  If you are like many garden enthusiasts, you have tried out just about every way you can think of to So what can you do?  You don’t want it to go to waste do you?  How about preserving it?

That’s right, you can preserve your zucchini for use later in the year! Here are a few of my favorite ways to preserve zucchini:

Zucchini Bread.  Zucchini bread is hands down one of the yummiest ways to eat zucchini!  I love making lots of zucchini bread and freezing it to eat later!  I make both regular zucchini bread as well as chocolate zucchini bread and it’s always a popular treat!  You can freeze the whole cooked loaf of zucchini bread, or you can freeze just the prepared batter.  Pour them into large freezer bags and store them in your freezer to be baked later!

Pickle it.  If you like pickles, one really good way to preserve your zucchini is to pickle it!  Just use your favorite pickle recipe and use zucchini in place of cucumbers and voila’ you have pickles!

Dry it.  Did you know that you can put zucchini in your food dehydrator?  Seriously, just slice your zucchini up into thin slices and dry it in your dehydrator.  Use the dried zucchini later in recipes, cook in oil or season then and eat like chips!

Freeze it.  Did you know that you can freeze zucchini?  It may seem impossible due to how watery zucchinis are.  If you were to freeze the zucchini whole, it would not work well.  Likely the water would expand and damage the cells of the fruit.  Luckily, there are ways around this.

  • Use a shredder.  Break out your favorite cheese shredder and go to town shredding the zucchini!  Use a paper towel to pat  some of the excess moisture and then store flat in freezer bags.  It can be used later for use in zucchini bread recipes, pasta sauces or soups and salads.
  • Blanch then bread.  First slice the zucchini, then blanch it to prevent mushiness.   Coat the slices in your favorite breading recipe then freeze.  You can fry these up later.

How to Easily Clean Sharpie From Almost Anything!

Up until a couple of days ago, I honestly thought that once an item has sharpie on it, it was a loss.  I didn’t realize how easily it can be cleaned up!

If your little one has went sharpie crazy on a hard surface, toy, book cover, tv, etc., give this a shot:

Dampen a cotton ball or swap with rubbing alcohol and rub over the sharpie mark gently.  It may take several times over before it comes off completely, but I promise you it works!

*Of course it won’t work on everything, but I tried several different materials and found success.

And for the record, we are the Deal Finding Family…I found a great Target Overstock/Salvage item selling at Goodwill for pennies on the dollar.  We were dressing it up for a gift.  (In case you all were wondering why we had a sharpie mark on a UPC. lol)

And by the way..if you haven’t checked out the brand new Target deals that you can find at Goodwill, get there quick, because you are going to love it.  You’re welcome. 🙂

Thinking About Granite Countertops? Here are Some Pros and Cons!

If you are looking for a high-end countertop option that is both beautiful and practical, granite countertops may be the perfect choice for you. Made from natural stone, granite is attractive, durable and long lasting. It comes in a wide range of colors, patterns and styles, and it offers plenty of options.

Granite Options

Because granite is cut from natural stone, it comes in a wide variety of unique colors and patterns. You can find granite in every color from black to beige to white to green, or even in less traditional colors such as blue, red or yellow. You can find a pattern that is subtle, bold, swirled, edgy or stippled, and you can get a countertop that is long, short, curved, straight or anything in between. Choose a granite countertop that is thick or thin, and choose an edge such as a flat, bullnose, radius, bevel, ogee or cove. Even if all of your neighbors have granite countertops—and some of them may—your countertop is still sure to be a unique reflection of your personal tastes and preferences.

Advantages of Granite Countertops

Granite offers two main advantages: beauty and durability. If you are looking for a high-end countertop that offers your home a unique and sophisticated look, granite is the perfect choice. It won’t let you down when it comes to function, either. Granite is scratch, dent, stain and heat resistant when properly sealed. Whether you have children, pets or frequent dinner parties, granite is up to the task.

Other advantages include the fact that granite is easy to maintain and easy to clean. Granite is very sanitary, as it does not absorb germs or bacteria when properly sealed. Granite also holds its resale value well, and can even increase your home’s value if well taken care of.

Disadvantages of Granite Countertops

Without a doubt, the biggest disadvantage of installing granite countertops is the expense. Granite countertops can cost between $50 and $400 per square foot, which may be more than some people can afford. While the countertops’ durability makes the price worth it, the initial expense can be a shock.

Other minor disadvantages include the fact that the countertops must be sealed as often as once a year, the fact that they can crack in rare circumstances, and the fact that they can stain if they aren’t sealed properly. Plus, they can be very heavy, which means that you need strong cabinets to support them.

If you are looking for something cheap and temporary, granite may not be for you, but if you are looking for the perfect beautiful countertops for your dream home, granite is the perfect choice!
