Thor’s Well, Cape Perpetua, Oregon

Have you ever heard of Thor’s Well? Well, my friends, you are just about to be introduced to one of Oregon’s most unique tourist attractions.

On on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, near the beautiful town of Yachats, Oregon, you will find Thor’s Well. A wondrous sinkhole that is busy swallowing up the ocean water that comes near it. Many who have visited this natural wonder say that it looks bottomless and it does look like it must be, but it is not. It is however, a very beautifully dangerous place to visit. As a mother, I recommend not letting your little ones visit Thor’s Well, and keeping a very close eye on your bigger kids, while not letting them get too close.

Thor’s Well, or as you may have heard it called, a “gaping sinkhole,” the “drainpipe of the Pacific” or even the “gate to hell.” Is actually a hole in the rock near the ocean, that many historians believe started out as a sea cave that was continuously dug out by the force of the waves. These waves eventually collapsed the roof of the cave, creating the 20 (approximate) foot deep hole that the ocean washes through forcefully over the rocks and into the hole.

For all of you adventurous sorts, the best time to visit Thor’s Well is roughly an hour before high tide so that you can witness the transformation of the water-less hole turned, angry Thor’s Well. While the site is actually at its most spectacular self during high tide, I highly advise not visiting at it’s peak, due to the danger. With raging waters and violent waves of the Pacific Northwest, those standing on the rocks are at high risk of being swept out to see by strong waves. Yes, there are plenty of photographers and nature lovers that chance this risk, but to me it is simply not worth it.

We have visited Thor’s Well 4 times over the last couple of years and we only go down on the rocks when it is lower tide, but still have been able to catch a great photo or two.

Where to go – It’s pretty easy to drive right by Thor’s Well, so you need to be on the lookout for it. There are two places to park in order to see Thor’s well. It is located right on Hwy 101, and you can drive just south of the Cape Perpetua Visitor’s Center and park on the west side of the hwy. If that parking lot is full (it is quite small), you can find the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area with camping and a day use area on the East side of the hwy. If you park in this area (we always do), there will be a small hike to get down to the viewpoint.

I really do highly suggest that everyone make a trip here at some point in their lives, it is hands-down on of the coolest things in nature that I have ever seen. I just beg that you be very conscious of your safety and the safety of your children. Don’t be so busy chasing the perfect shot that you put yourself at risk.

If you make your way there, be sure to let me know! I want to hear what you think!

Our Visit to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas

A couple of months ago, my husband and I went to Las Vegas with some friends of ours and had a blast!  Because I work with some amazing people, I was able to score some tickets to the world famous Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in exchange for my review of it.  I want to be very upfront with you here, I always give my honest feedback when reviewing something regardless of if I paid for it or not.

My Madame Tussauds review:

Let’s start this by saying that as a teen I used to be a celebrity junkie, I loved all things celebrity and I always knew when the latest celeb was released in wax, but I was the only one in our group that had heard of it.  This made me a little bit nervous that I had oversold this part of our trip. It turned out that I didn’t need to be stressed about it, it was actually a fun stop on our trip.  Here are my takeaways of the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum:

  • Madame Tussauds is located in The Venetian Casino in Vegas and quite honestly was not super easy to find.  Maybe that’s just part of the Vegas experience, but I had no trouble finding the other things I was looking for this trip, so I definitely feel like it could be located in a space that was a little easier to find or maybe some more signs or something.
  • The wax sculptures to me were hit and miss.  Some such as Jane Lynch, Shaq, and Mike Tyson and quite a few more were spot on, while others we were left questioning who they were (Jamie Foxx was one such sculpture).  Still, though, there were more that were great than not.
  • The Marvel SuperHeroes 4D Experience was WAY cooler than I expected it to be.  I felt like we were getting ready to watch something that my 11-year-old son would like so my hopes were not high for this, but I was quite surprised.  I walked out of there with a smile on my face.  Oh, and if you are wondering, yes, my 11-year-old would have flipped out over it!
  • The Hangover Experience was pretty cool.  It was too early in the day for us to enjoy a drink along with it, but I bet that would be pretty fun too!
  • The price is a bit steep.  While I definitely think I would visit again, I don’t think I would visit without looking for a coupon or a discounted price to get in.  I get that everything in Vegas is expensive, but I think $20 is a bit steep for the price.  If you want to go, be sure and take this $5 off coupon with you!  The coupon is valid for up to 10 people!

See what I mean about Jamie Foxx?

Why You Should be Using an Auto Seat Protector

If you have a little one in a Booster Seat or other car seat, you know what kind of messes can be hiding underneath those seats.  This is especially true if you haven’t moved the car seat from its position in a while.  Seriously, you will find toys, food crumbs and honestly, terrifying stuff that you can no longer even identify.  It’s truly frightening and often disgusting what you will find.  That’s why an auto seat protector is so beneficial.

We all know I have a toddler, right?  He is an extremely messy toddler who loves fries and I am that mom who lets him eat in the car, which means I have a lot of messes to clean up often. A while back though, I got an offer to try this Daffadoot Auto Seat Protector and it is awesome.  It goes under the car seat and protects my upholstery from the ground up food and mystery stains that have always come with the car seats.  It fits perfectly underneath the seat, doesn’t affect the seating position or the integrity of it since it doesn’t get in the way of the LATCH system.  Plus, it even has storage pockets on the lower part of it!  I use it to store a couple of diapers and a pack of wipes so I no longer need to have a diaper back in the car with me.  I have black upholstery so the black color of the protector doesn’t bother me at all.  Best of all though, when I recently took the car seat out to clean it, I didn’t have to clean the seat underneath it!  The auto seat protector kept it completely clean and free of yuck!

Overall I have really loved this thing and I am thinking about ordering a second one for my husband’s car (he tends to be a little more OCD than I am about the cleanliness of his vehicle, so I may give him this one and wait for a second for me now that I think about it).

If you are interested in getting an auto seat protector, Amazon currently has a 20% off coupon available, which makes it just $15!

Gluten Free Review: The Essential Baking Company Super Seeded Multi-Grain Gluten Free bread

Since I am fairly new to the gluten-free world, I have decided to go ahead and review some of the GF products on the market.  For the most part, I am trying to go gluten-free by simply taking those types of foods out of my diet, however sometimes you really want a sandwich, am I right?  Since I have little to no room in my kitchen I have no desire to try baking my own gluten-free bread at this point.  So when the family requested sandwich night for dinner the other night, I decided to join them.  I knew that I would need to make sure that I had gluten free bread, so I headed out to my local Safeway store and found this The Essential Baking Company Super Seeded Multi-Grain Gluten Free bread and decided to give it a try.

It was a quite expensive as are most Gluten Free products, but I figured since I rarely eat bread these days, I was willing to spring for the $5.99 loaf.  I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of this bread.  It’s almost like regular bread, the only difference being that it tastes a little dry, but your condiments can make up for that.  I also tried it as toast the next day during breakfast and discovered that one cycle through the toaster was not enough.  It needs to be almost to the burnt level and then you cannot tell that you are eating GF bread at all.

Overall, I am a fan and will buy it again for those sandwich cravings and splurges.  I’m not a fan of the price, but it’s not so bad if it is an occasional treat.

*This is my own personal view, I was not paid or compensated in any way.  I simply wanted to share with others who are learning their own gluten-free ways.

A Mom’s Take on Fortnite

Do you ever play video games with your kids?  I have a 10-year-old son that loves to play video games and while I don’t mind that he plays them, I am not a big fan myself.  I just don’t enjoy sitting down and playing a game and my preference was that my son play them in his room or when I was busy with other things and didn’t need to be in the living room.  But I’ve got to be honest with you, I have changed my stance a little bit when it comes to Fornite.  Epic’s wildly popular Battle Royale game.

Until very recently, my son was all about playing Minecraft and Roblox.  Yes, he has plenty of other games, but those were the ones he loved.  I have been relatively strict on the games he plays. Here were my rules for his games:

  • No sexual content whatsoever
  • No bloody violence or gore
  • Shooting games may be allowed depending on the game (I let him play hunting games, for instead and he could play a Navy Seals game, but only with my husband present)

Fortnite is a Battle Royale game where you hop online with 100 other people on a server and battle your way toward number 1.  You sneak through landscapes and into houses, barns and businesses hoping to find “loot” (guns, ammo, med kits, shield juice, wood for building and more).

I am totally and 100% ok with him playing Fornite even though the game does involve shooting people.  The game itself is very animated, there is no blood and the people you shoot disappear instantly, so it’s not as though you see dead bodies.

My husband and my teenaged daughter have gotten in on the fun too and they all take turns playing it.  I will fess up and acknowledge that I have played it a couple of times too.  It’s a lot of fun and the excitement of getting into the top 10 (I’ve done so twice if I may add) or winning the game is incredibly exciting.  My son won his first battle the other day and I could’ve sworn I saw tears of joy.  It’s a huge feat, especially since so many people are playing it right now (last estimate was 45 million players have signed up for it).

I have found this to be a fun, family-friendly game that I am more than happy to have my kids play.  We have had several nights of Fornite battles and it is so much fun!  We look forward to it.

Ozeri INSTAVAC Nesting Food Storage Container Set Review

Are you looking for a way to keep your extra food lasting as long as possible?  As a family who has wasted far too much money in food that has gone to waste, I am always looking for ways to make my food last as long as possible before I toss it.

I got this Ozeri InstaVac Food Storage Set a while back and my initial reaction was that the set I got is a little bulky for my taste.  I cannot find a good space to store it in my kitchen, but to be fair I have a very small kitchen (soon to change as we are getting a new house!!), I actually have loved what it has done for my food.  I made a salad last week and ended up with lots extra, so I put it into one of these Ozeri bowls and oh my goodness, 2 days later it was still crisp.

The size of this set notwithstanding, I actually have loved what it has done for my food.  I made a salad last week and ended up with lots extra, so I put it into one of these Ozeri bowls and oh my goodness, 2 days later it was still crisp.  This has worked out so much better than those cheap sets I have been buying at the dollar store and Walmart.

Ozeri Touch II Digital Kitchen Scale Review

A while back I received an Ozeri Touch II Digital Kitchen Scale.  See, I’m not sure if you remember or not, but I had a baby recently (okay, a year and a half ago) and I really need to make some changes to get my weight back on track.  After a miserable fight with Post Partum Depression, my weight has unfortunately not changed one bit since the baby was born.

Anyway…I thought that one way that I can work toward weight loss is by making sure that I am eating the right amount of foods and weighing the foods are a great way to do that!  I try to weigh out the meats and dairy products I eat to ensure that I am eating the right portions.  Plus, while I don’t feel the need to weigh them out for my dieting purposes, the kids and I also have fun weighing out our fruits and vegetables.

This Ozeri Touch II Digital Kitchen Scale is super easy to use, you basically just have to hit the power button.  If you want your foods measured in a different unit, you just need to touch the unit button to get to the desired choice.  I have had no issues whatsoever.  The easy touch buttons are flush with the scale, which makes it really easy to keep clean!  Simply stated, I really like this scale and plan to use it for years to come and I highly recommend it for those wanting to start weighing their foods.
